Eddie is Faulkner and Charlie's eldest brother.

Personality[]

Eddie is kind and mature.[2] He genuinely cares for his family. During the war with the Linger Straits, he becomes increasingly stressed due to work and the threat of losing his contract.[3]

Background[]

After the death of their middle brother Charlie, their father became very withdrawn and Eddie took on a more active and paternal role towards Faulkner, who was 13 at the time.[4]

Some time later, Eddie left home without explanation.[5] When Faulkner calls him, he admits to believing Eddie left because he blamed Faulkner for Charlie's death. Eddie denies that, saying he left because he was selfish. He tells Faulkner that he wanted to lead an independent life. Their father lives with Eddie, and seems to have done so for quite some time.[2]

Chapter 14: And In Ruined Flesh Ascend Faulkner calls Eddie and they talk on the phone. Eddie is kind to him, offering to come get him and help him out of trouble. He allays some of Faulkner's fears about their relationship. He tells him that their father is with him, and goes to get him to speak to Faulkner. Faulkner hangs up before he can do so.
Chapter 38: Shall Wither In Ruin And Rust Faulkner calls Eddie outraged that their father has been left alone in their childhood house in his state. Eddie argues with him, saying that he has to prioritise work due to the war. Eddie promises to come visit the following day and discuss the situation. He does not make it. Neither Eddie nor Faulkner are in the wrong, they are both stuck in an incredibly difficult situation and neither of them know how to handle it.

  • Charlie is Eddie's younger brother. Charlie's death seemed to have deeply affected him, as he became far more protective of Richard afterwards.[4]
  • Richard is Eddie's youngest brother. Eddie becomes a fatherly figure towards Richard following the death of Charlie and the withdrawal of their father.[4] When Eddie leaves, Richard thinks it is because he blames him for Charlie's death, which he doesn't.[2] Due to Eddie's failure to look after their father and Richard's assumption that Eddie should be the one to do so, their relationship becomes strained.[3]
  • His Father and Eddie have a complicated relationship. Eddie ended up parentified following the death of Charlie, taking on the responsibility of looking after and caring for Richard.[4] He leaves home because he feels like he can do better than them.[2] He cannot look after his father due to his job.[3]
